Volleyball Battles Back to Place Second at Championship

ELGIN, IL – Freshman Landon Brouwer and sophomore Noah Liousfi led the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Volleyball team to a thrilling comeback effort Saturday that ended with a 3-0 loss to top-seeded Jessup University in the championship match of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Championship Tournament in Illinois.

The Redhawks (21-21) opened the day with a convincing 3-0 win over host Judson University to earn their first victory of the tournament. Roberts won by set scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-18.

The win moved Roberts into a three-way tie for second place in the standings and the strength of a pair of set wins from Friday earned the team a bye in the first round of the tie-breaker sets to determine the opponent for Jessup in the title match.

Judson downed Oakland City University in the first tie-breaker set to 25 points and Roberts took the tie-breaker set over Judson 25-22 to advance to the title match.

In the title match, Jessup won by set scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19.

Brouwer and Liousfi were each named to the All-Tournament team.

Against Judson, sophomore Ryan DeJohn delivered a team-leading 13 kills with a .375 attack percentage and fellow sophomore Griffin Monrad had eight kills with a .467 attack percentage and four aces. Brouwer had 30 assists and seven digs for the Redhawks and junior Moises Jimenez was credited with eight digs.

In the title match, DeJohn added 11 kills and sophomore Paul Fillion chipped in six kills and Liousfi had five kills for the offense. Monrad led the serving with five aces and Jimenez eclipsed the 500 career digs milestone with his five digs in the match.
