DOBBS FERRY, NY – Senior Jacob Zimmerman scored late in the first half for the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Lacrosse team Wednesday and the goal sparked a run as the Redhawks scored six of the seven goals to tie the score but Mercy University tallied the final three goals of the game to post an 11-8 win in the East Coast Conference (ECC) semifinal game.
Roberts (6-8) fell behind early as Mercy (10-3) scored six of the first seven goals of the game and led 6-1 with five minutes elapsed in the second period.
Junior Justin Skelly scored a man-up goal to stop the run for Roberts.
The Mavericks scored five minutes later to take a 7-2 lead before Zimmerman scored with 16 seconds left in the first half.
Skelly added his second goal of the game 37 seconds into the third quarter and Zimmerman scored at 9:27 to trim the lead to 7-5.
Freshman Cody Coleman scored with 1:54 left in the period to make it a one-goal game.
Mercy scored less than 40 seconds later to regain the two-goal lead at 8-6 before junior Curtis Denison scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 8-8 with 10:25 left to play in the fourth quarter.
Mercy answered with three goals in a span of 1:11 to regain the lead and held on for the 11-8 win.
Denison, Skelly and Zimmerman each scored twice for Roberts. Junior
Sam Keens led the defense with three caused turnovers and junior
Garrett Kayser made 10 saves in the Roberts goal.
