DUNBAR, WV – The Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Volleyball team ran into a pair of tough opponents Friday on the first day of competition at the UC/WVSU Crossover Tournament in West Virginia. The Redhawks fell 3-0 to host West Virginia State and also dropped a 3-0 decision to Point Park University on Friday afternoon.
Roberts fell to West Virginia State but set scores of 27-25, 25-20 and 25-16. The Redhawks fell to Point Park by scores of 25-14, 25-23 and 25-23.
In the first match, Roberts battled back from a five-point deficit late in the first set to tie the score at 23-23. The team rallied as West Virginia had three different set points but eventually dropped the 27-25 set. The Redhawks had an early lead in the second set but fell as West Virginia rallied for a mid-set run.
Junior Camryn Karelus led Roberts with 10 kills and middle blocker Morgan Verbridge added five kills and a team-leading four blocks. Senior Morgan Burnett added nine kills and had seven digs. Freshman Ryan Hull led the defense with 16 digs.
In the second match of the day, Roberts rallied after a double-digit loss in the first set and battled to a pair of close sets with two-point losses in sets two and three.
Karelus added eight kills and freshman Rachel Dixon also connected on eight kills for Roberts. Verbridge added another five kills, four digs and three blocks while Hull had a double-double with 14 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Sierra George handed out 18 assists and fellow freshman Tiana Copp finished with seven kills and eight digs.
Roberts will play Glenville State and the University of Charleston (WV) Saturday to wrap up the West Virginia trip.
