ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Ryan DeJohn delivered a team-high 16 kills to lead the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University Tuesday to complete a two-match sweep over the Knights at the Voller Athletic Center.
Roberts (4-2) took a 2-0 lead in the match with 25-20 and 25-22 wins in the first two sets but the Knights (0-3) rallied to take the third set 25-20 before the Redhawks rallied late in the fourth set to finish off a 26-24 set win and the match victory to remain undefeated at home this season.
Sophomore Griffin Monrad recorded a pair of late kills to lead Roberts in the opening set. DeJohn had back-to-back kills late in the second set during a 4-0 run as the Redhawks took a 16-14 lead and freshman Jordan Hoover ended the set with a pair of kills for the 2-0 match lead.
FDU used a 6-0 run midway through the third set to take a 15-11 lead and finished off the set to trim the match score to 2-1.
The teams battled back-and-forth for the entire fourth set. Roberts took a 20-17 lead late but FDU battled back to even the score at 20-20 and the teams traded points until DeJohn finished the match with back-to-back-to-back kills for the final three points of the match.
There were 17 ties and five lead changes in the fourth set.
DeJohn finished with 16 kills and freshman Gavin Terp added 10 kills and a .421 attack percentage with just two errors on 19 swings. Sophomore Landon Brouwer handed out 46 assists and registered eight digs while freshman Jordan Hoover had nine kills and eight blocks.
Roberts will play next in a tri-match at Finger Lakes Community College against the Lakers and Buffalo State Sunday afternoon.
