Early Goal is the Difference in ECC Road Game

DOBBS FERRY, NY – Junior Jade Moncada and sophomore Avery Carinci had two shots on goal each for the Roberts Wesleyan University Field Hockey team Wednesday afternoon but an early goal by Mercy University gave the Mavericks a slim 1-0 victory in the East Coast Conference (ECC) road game.

Mercy (6-7 overall, 5-2 ECC) scored two minutes into the game and was able to cling to the lead for the rest of the contest to pull into a first-place tie with the Redhawks (7-7, 5-2 ECC) in the ECC standings.

Roberts won the first meeting of the season between the two teams with a shootout victory in Rochester.

Moncada had a shot late in the first half as the Redhawks had a late offensive rush with three shots on goal in the final three minutes of the period. Freshman Ashlyn Hermanofski and Carinci had shots in the closing minutes of the half.

Carinci and Moncada had back-to-back shots late in the fourth quarter as Roberts battled for a pair of penalty corners with less than eight minutes to play in the game.

Senior Avery Richardson made five saves for Roberts with three in the opening quarter and two in the final 15 minutes.

The Redhawks return to action Saturday with an ECC home game against Molloy University at 1 p.m. on the turf field.
