PISCATAWAY, NJ – Sophomore Antonie Pieterse swam the anchor leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay and led the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Swimming and Diving team to a close second-place finish to secure the team championship for the Redhawks at the Metropolitan Collegiate Championships Sunday night in New Jersey.
The second-place finish gave the Redhawks 1480 points for the meet and second-place Baruch College – who won the relay – finished second overall in the team points race with 1474 points. SUNY Maritime (850 points) was second followed by Gordon College (760), Brooklyn College (730), Mount St. Mary College (445) and Sarah Lawrence College (28). Head Coach Sara Smith was named the Coach of the Meet, Pieterse was named the Swimmer of the Meet and freshman Raphael Weber was named the Rookie of the Meet.
The relay, with Weber, freshman Hayden Smith, sophomore Ethan Springle and Pieterse raced to a time of 3:10.12.
Pieterse was one of four first-place finishers for the Redhawks as he won the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.60. Springle was sixth, Smith was seventh in the race.
Weber was first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:50.84 and junior Jaden Parshall was eighth in 2:20.60.
Sophomore Tanner Pinto-Cohn was first in the 1650 freestyle race with his time of 16:41.91. Fellow sophomore Derek Woodford was second in the distance race with a time of 17:22.71 and freshman Anthony Merced was fourth in 18:28.40.
In diving, junior Brodyn Baldwin won the 1-meter event with his score of 323.15. He was named the Male Diver of the meet and Diving Coach Jackie Bors was named the Diving Coach of the Meet. Freshman Joel Fesmire was second on the 1-meter board with his score of 292.65.
