DOBBS FERRY, NY – After a close first half, the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Basketball team surrendered a pair of double-digit runs in the third quarter but rallied late to trim the lead before eventually falling 68-54 to Mercy University in an East Coast Conference (ECC) game Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Jada Mushat nailed a 3-pointer with two minutes left in the first half to give Roberts (4-13 overall, 1-8 ECC) a 28-26 lead but Mercy (16-6, 10-1 ECC) scored the last five points of the quarter to take a 31-28 lead into the halftime intermission.
The Mavericks had a 10-2 run early in the third quarter and ended the period with an 11-0 run to extend the lead to 54-39 after 30 minutes of action.
Mercy opened up an 18-point lead early in the final quarter but a late run sparked by a basket and four free throws by Mushat trimmed the lead and a rebound and basket for freshman Aniyah Jones cut the lead to 10 points at 64-54 with two minutes remaining. The Mavericks closed out the game with four free throws to seal the victory.
Mushat led all scorers with 27 points and Jones added 19 with a team-leading seven rebounds. Roberts was whistled for 31 fouls in the game and Mercy was assessed just 13. The Mavericks were 23-for-37 from the line while Roberts finished 8-for-98 from the line.
The Redhawks continue ECC play Friday and will host Molloy with a 6 p.m. game at the Voller Athletic Center.
