BUFFALO, NY – Sophomore Anna Varland threw for two touchdowns and freshman Aimee Turner ran for two more to lead the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Flag Football team to a 34-13 victory over Villa Maria College Thursday night on the indoor turf field at the Sahlen's Sports Park complex.
The Redhawks (2-0) scored twice in the first quarter as Varland tossed a pair of TD passes to give Roberts and early 14-0 lead. Freshman Aimee Turner raced in for a short TD run to extend the lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter.
Villa Maria (0-1) answered in the second period with a defensive score but the Redhawks took a 21-6 lead into the halftime intermission.
Neither team scored in the third quarter as the defenses caused multiple turnovers.
In the final quarter, Turner scored on another rushing attempt to extend the Roberts lead to 27-6 and both teams added late scores for the final margin of victory.
Varland was 13-for-22 passing for 110 yards and a pair of TDs and added another score on a rushing attempt. Turner ran for 64 yards on 10 carries with two ending in the endzone.
Freshman Sarah Seyfang led the receivers with six catches and 64 yards with two scores and added a pair of interceptions on defense for the Redhawks.
Roberts will host both SUNY Brockport and D'Youville University Sunday in a tri-match on Redhawks Turf Field. Brockport downed D'Youville 61-0 Thursday in a game played on an adjacent field at Sahlen's Sports Park.
