ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Aimee Turner ran for three touchdowns, threw for a fourth and caught a pass for a fifth as she led the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Flag Football team to a convincing 33-13 victory over SUNY Brockport Sunday on a soggy and chilly afternoon.
The day was originally schedule to feature three games but D'Youville University had to cancel early Sunday morning and the Brockport vs. Roberts game was the only game of the three contested. No makeup date was announced for the D'Youville game.
Roberts (3-0) took a first quarter lead as freshman Sarah Seyfang caught a 12-yard pass from Turner to open the scoring. Late in the period, the Redhawks extended the lead with a safety after a muffed snap in the endzone gave Roberts an 8-0 lead.
Turner scored twice in the second quarter on runs of 23 yards and six yards as the Redhawks extended the lead to 20-0 at the halftime intermission.
In the second half, Turner caught an 18-yard TD pass from sophomore Anna Varland to push the lead to 27-0 after Varland converted the extra point.
With just 33 seconds left in the third quarter, Turner scored her fifth TD of the game with an impressive 38-yard scoring run as she avoided multiple defenders before breaking free to the corner of the endzone and the Roberts lead was 33-0.
The Golden Eagles (1-1) added a pair of fourth-quarter scores for the final margin of victory.
Turner ran for 91 yards on 13 carries, was 3-for-11 for 49 yards passing and had the one catch for 18 yards.
Varland finished with 43 yards on eight carries and sophomore Aaliyah McCoy rushed for 34 yards on eight runs. Varland was 3-for-8 passing for 89 yards and Seyfang finished with 74 receiving yards on four catches.
Defensively, McCoy led the team with eight stops, four behind the line of scrimmage and a sack. Sophomore Neve Tilley accounted for five tackles and a pair of pass breakups.
The Redhawks will play at SUNY Geneseo Tuesday and then travel to Albany for games against the University at Albany and Roxbury CC Saturday.
