Season Ends in Championship Game for Men’s Basketball

BUFFALO, NY – Junior Collin Woods scored 22 and was named to the All-Tournament team as he led the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Basketball team as the Redhawks battled Daemen University in the East Coast Conference (ECC) Tournament Championship game.

Daemen (30-1), ranked No. 4 in the latest national poll, earned the NCAA Division II Tournament automatic bid with an 86-66 victory Sunday in the ECC Title game.

The Wildcats used an early run to take a 17-6 lead in the opening minutes of the game and increased the lead to as many as 20 points before the end of the first half. Junior Mohamed Soumahoro hit a late basket to trim the lead to 45-28 at the break.

Roberts rallied early in the second half to cut the lead to 11 points as Woods connected on a close jumper and freshman Jordan Brown hit one of two free throws with 11:32 left in the game.

A Soumahoro layup three minutes later made it a 12-point Daemen lead at 62-50 but the Wildcats responded with an 11-0 run to stretch the lead to 23 points and Daemen cruised to the win.

Brown also earned All-Tournament honors as he finished with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 3-of-4 3-pointers. Soumahoro finished with 18 points and a team-leading five rebounds.

The Redhawks (10-17) finished the season with six wins in the final nine games. Roberts entered the ECC Tournament as the No. 6 seed and defeated No. 3 Staten Island and No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas College to earn the spot in the championship game.
