WORCESTER, MA – The Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Lacrosse team scored seven goals in the third period including four by sophomore Lia MacDougall to take a lead heading into the final quarter but Assumption University rallied and scored the go-ahead goal with three seconds left to escape with an 11-10 win Sunday afternoon in Massachusetts.
Alison Dioguardi scored a couple minutes into the game to give the Redhawks (1-4) an early lead but Assumption (1-3) scored three goals in the fist and added the first two goals of the second period for a five-goal run and a sizable lead.
MacDougall score her first of the day at 4:51 of the second period to stop the run and start a streak of four-of-five goals for Roberts to tie the score at 6-6.
MacDougall had three goals in the run while senior Kadie Tierney and freshman Brooke Guelli added single goals in the Roberts run.
The Greyhounds scored to take a 7-6 lead but MacDougall answered with a pair of goals to regain the lead for Roberts at 8-7 with just less than four minutes remaining in the third period.
Assumption scored to tie the score again at 8-8 but with 1:10 left to play in the third quarter, Tierney score to give the Redhawks another lead at 9-8.
The game was tied again three minutes into the final quarter before Tierney scored her third goal of the game to give the Redhawks the 10-9 advantage with 9:04 remaining.
The Greyhounds scored with five minutes remaining to tie the score one more time at 10-10.
Both teams had chances in the closing minutes and freshman Josella Harrison made two big saves to keep the game tied.
A late turnover gave Assumption possession with 30 seconds left and the Greyhounds moved up the field and scored with just three second left for the winning goal.
MacDougall led Roberts with five goals, senior Ella Dossier had five points with her five assists and Tierney added three goals for the Roberts offense.
Senior Emma Taylor led the team with three ground balls and three draw controls. Harrison finished with six saves in the Redhawk goal.
Roberts will open East Coast Conference (ECC) play Saturday at home against Mercy University with a 12 pm game on the Redhawk Turf Field.
