Redhawks Reach-Out: Student-Athletes Serve Communities As First Responders

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - As "New York's Leading University For Character Education," servant leadership is one of the key missions at Roberts Wesleyan University.

Two members of the Redhawks Athletic Department are serving their communities as first responders.

Ava Trzepacz, a sophomore, on the Roberts field hockey team is a firefighter and emergency medical technician for the Chili Fire District an has been a firefighter since the age of 16 in her hometown of Elma.

Nate Worden, a sophomore on the men's volleyball team, serves as an EMT for the Penfield-Webster Ambulance.

"I am just trying to help my community and help people," Worden said. "I just love what I do."

Nate plans to pursue  a career in medicine while Ava is aiming for a career in law enforcement.

In February, Ava, who was working for Athletic Communications at the time, assisted in treating an assistant coach from the University of the District of Columbia who was having a medical emergency.

 "Whenever something happens, it's just your due diligence to go and help out,"  Trzepacz said.
