ROCHESTER, NY – Junior Jade Moncada scored her first career goal on a penalty corner play for the Roberts Wesleyan University Field Hockey team but the Redhawks dropped a third straight game to a nationally-ranked opponent as Slippery Rock posted a 6-1 win Tuesday afternoon on Redhawks Turf Field.
After a scoreless first quarter, Slippery Rock, ranked No. 9 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) national poll, scored a pair of goals in the opening minutes of the second period.
Eight minutes into the period, Moncada took a crossing pass from fellow junior Makena Tooley and fired a shot from the edge of the scoring arc past the Slippery Rock goalie to cut the lead in half.
Less than two minutes later, Slippery Rock regained the two-goal lead and added a fourth goal on the game before the end of the second quarter to take a 4-1 lead into the halftime intermission.
The nationally-ranked opponents added two more goals in the opening minutes of the second half for a 6-1 lead.
The Roberts goalie tandem of senior Avery Richardson and freshman Amber Morgado combined to stop each of the final five shots of the game. Richardson finished with 13 saves while Morgado made two saves in the final quarter of the game.
Roberts returns to action Wednesday, September 30 at Mansfield University.
