Raiders Drop Season Opener

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (November 1, 2011) – The Women's Basketball team lost its season opener 77-71 to the visiting Brock University Badgers in overtime. 

Early on, the Raiders fell behind early to the visitors 11-0.

The Raiders struggled to get going in their season opener as the Badgers had a double-digit lead for most of the first half.

The Raiders would draw to within three off a three-point shot from Marissa Bunce with five minutes left to make the score 26-23.

Bunce would give the home team the lead with under four minutes to play with another three-pointer to make the score 29-26. That would be the only lead the Raiders would have, going into halftime, the Badgers led 36-35.

At the half, the Raiders shot 40%, going 12 of 30 from the floor and only 20% from behind the 3-point line.

The Badgers' Andrea Polischuk led all scorers with 18 points in the first half. Bunce scored 15 with six points coming from beyond the arc.

The Raiders struggled to keep it close in the early parts of the second half as the Badgers jumped out to a 10 point lead.

With six minutes left, Sydni Lester drew the foul after making the lay-up. Lester would make the free throw to cut the Badgers lead 53-52.

Lindsay Kendall would give the Raiders the lead off a jump shot, but the Badgers responded to go up 55-54 with five minutes left.

Kendall made two free throws with 1:26 to play to make the score 63-62. With thirty seconds left, Kendall drew a foul and made the free throw to give the Raiders a 65-63 lead.

Jessica Del Signore hit a three to give the Badgers a 66-65 lead with 20.5 seconds remaining.

Sarah Alwardt drew a foul with 15 seconds left, going 1 for 2 from the line to tie the score 66-66.

The Raiders' defense would hold, forcing overtime.

The visitors took control in the extra period, taking a 76-69 lead with a minute left. The Raiders couldn't make a run, losing 77-71.

The Badgers' Nicole Rosenkranz earned a double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds.

Sarah Child led the Raiders with 15 points. Kendall posted eight rebounds and 10 points.

As a team, the Raiders shot 32% from the floor.

The Raiders are back in action this Friday when they travel to Boston, MA to face conference opponent Fisher College.
