Raiders Stumble, Fall to Point Park

Box Score

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 30, 2011) – The Raiders lost 3-0 to a talented Point Park University Pioneers squad this evening at the Voller Athletic Center.

Coming into the match, the Pioneers had received votes in the latest NAIA Coaches Top 25 Poll and had won three consecutive matches.

“Point Park played very well,” said Coach Jon Meyers. “We had trouble picking up their off-speed attacks. This match proves we still have a lot of growing and improving left to do this season.”

The Pioneers dominated the first set, taking a 15-4 lead. The Raiders struggled score points offensively for long stretches in the set. The Pioneers won the final point of the set off a Raiders error by Lisa Bierdeman, winning 25-12.

In the second set, the teams traded points for most of the set. The Pioneers held the advantage late, gaining a 21-18 lead over the Raiders.  The Raiders rallied to make the score 24-23, but that was as close the Raiders would come, unable to return an attack by the Pioneers.

The third set saw the Raiders fall behind early and rally to draw within two at 15-13. The Pioneers then scored four straight, making the score 19-13. The visitors poured it on late, despite a Raiders rally, winning the final set 25-19.

The Raiders were led by Gisela Ocasio with 11 kills and 8 digs. Katie Maher had 12 digs for the Raiders and Lisa Bierdeman had 29 assists.

The Pioneers improve to 19-4 overall and 3-1 in the American Mideast Conference.

With the loss, the Raiders fall to 1-2 in the AMC and 13-6 overall.

The team is back in action on Wednesday, October 5th when they travel to face Daemen College at 7pm.
