ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 26, 2012) – The Women's Basketball team defeated rivals Houghton College this evening 62-55.
Coming into the game, the Raiders had lost four of their last six games. In that stretch, the Raiders had gone 1-3 in conference action.
In the first half, the Raiders struggled to contain the Highlanders from three-point range in the first half as the visitors hit five from beyond the arc.
With 7:38 left in the half, Jennifer Hudson gave Houghton the largest lead on the half after she was fouled while hitting a three. Hudson made the free throw to give the Highlanders a 33-21 lead.
The Raiders would come back and eventually take 38-34 lead into the locker room.
Marissa Bunce paced the home team in the half with 11 points after going 3 of 4 from long range.
In the second half, the game continued to stay close as the Raiders held a two point lead until Bunce stole the ball in the back-court and made an easy lay-up to make it 57-53 with 2:05 left in the game.
With a minute and change left,
Sarah Child converted a hook shot along the baseline to make it a six-point lead for the Raiders.
Hudson led all scorers with 24 points for Houghton, going 6 of 13 and hitting 8 of 9 from the charity stripe.
Marissa Sell earned a double-double, scoring 16 points and hauling in 14 rebounds for the Raiders.
Bunce scored a team high 19 points after hitting five from three-point range.
The Raiders won the turnover battle by forcing 23 turnovers.
With the win, the Raiders improve to 13-8 overall and 3-3 in the American Mideast Conference.
The Raiders are back in action this Saturday when the Raiders host Wilberforce University. Tip-off is slated for 2pm.
