ROCHESTER, N.Y. (February 14, 2012) – The Women's Basketball team defeated the Walsh University Cavaliers this evening 45-37.
It was senior night for the Raiders as the team celebrated the team's two seniors,
Bianca Jones and
Sarah Child in a special pre-game ceremony.
Child didn't disappoint the Valentine's Day crowd, by scoring a team high 10 points.
The Raiders trailed from the start of the game until
Sarah Alwardt made a lay-up to make it an 18-17 score, giving the Raiders their first lead of the game with 4:29 left in the half.
The Cavaliers retook the lead a minute later when Mandi Swickard hit a jumper as the visitors would head into the locker room with a 21-18 lead.
The Raiders struggled to find their rhythm offensively, shooting a paltry 25.9% from the field.
In the second half, the Raiders found their offense, going on a 14-6 run to take a 32-27 lead with 10 minutes remaining.
Five minutes later, the Raiders would grab an eight point lead when
Sydni Lester converted a three-point play after drawing the foul on a driving lay-up, giving the home team a 38-30 lead.
Down the stretch, the Raiders stifled the Cavaliers offense as the visitors managed to shoot a mere 10% from the field in the second half.
Freshman
Sydni Lester chipped in 10 points for the Raiders after hitting 6 of 7 from the free throw line.
Marissa Bunce added nine points and five rebounds for the home team.
The Raiders improve to 19-9 overall and 9-4 in the American Mideast Conference.
The team will close out the regular season this Saturday on the road when they visit Wilberforce University (Ohio). Tip-off is set for 2pm.
