Women's Soccer Wins NCCAA East Region Title in Overtime

Ellie Swan came up big for Roberts Wesleyan, scoring the lone goal of the game in the 101st minute

HOUGHTON, N.Y. (Nov. 22, 2014) – The Women's Soccer team is heading to the NCCAA National Championships after defeating Houghton, 1-0, in the East Region final this afternoon.

The game-winner came in the 101st minute when Ellie Swan netted her eighth goal of the season, which was assisted by Heaven Palamitia.

Roberts Wesleyan, who has never defeated the Highlanders outside of penalty shootouts, received the automatic bid for the region at the upcoming National Championships in December.

In the game the visitors pelted Houghton's goal with a total of 19 shots, putting 11 of those on frame. Sophomore midfielder Bella Mitrevski was busy in the game with her three shots on goal and five total shots.

Senior goalkeeper Marissa Sell earned her fifth shutout of the season after keeping a clean sheet with four saves.

As a team, Roberts Wesleyan stifled the Highlanders by allowing just six shots in the game.

The defense has earned two shutouts in the East Region tournament as they also shutout Lancaster Bible, 4-0, in the semifinals last weekend.

With the win, Roberts Wesleyan improves to 11-9-0 overall and will now await their seeding in the nine-team NCCAA National Championships, which will be held Dec. 1-6 in Kissimmee, Fla.

The Redhawks are making their first trip to a national tournament since the 2011 season when they advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. Their last to trip the NCCAA National Championships was in 2010.
