ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Dec. 6, 2014) – Roberts Wesleyan capped off a remarkable Wendy's College Classic by winning their first title in the local tournament since 1968.
The Redhawks snapped a three-game skid in the final, including a loss in last year's edition.
The first half was neck-and-neck with both teams trading points, evidence by the teams heading into halftime tied at 34-34.
However, the Redhawks came out of the break with purpose as they used a 15-3 run to start the second half to make it a 49-37 lead with 13:39 remaining in the game.
Geneseo then used a 10-1 run of their own, but it was not enough as Roberts Wesleyan held on for the win as they hit key free-throws down the stretch.
Leading the Redhawks was junior
Tyrel Dixon, who scored a career-high 28 points after hitting 9 of 15 from the field and a perfect 10 of 10 from the charity stripe. Dixon also tallied six steals and six rebounds. For his efforts, the forward was named the Classic's Most Valuable Player.
Marcus Gooding was the only other player to score in double-figures as he added 17 points for Roberts Wesleyan.
As a team, Roberts Wesleyan shot 46.2% from the field and 75% from the free-throw line.
Jordan McBride continued his solid play, dishing out five assists to go along with his eight points.
Geneseo's Gordon Lyons led his team with 19 points after shooting 50% from the field while hauling down 11 rebounds.
The win puts Roberts Wesleyan at 4-2 on the year as they now open East Coast Conference action next Friday night when they host Queens at 8pm.
