Men's Basketball Splits Weekend Away

The Redhawks drop to Molloy

Rockville Centre, N.Y. (January 31, 2015) - The men's Basketball team fell to Molloy College this afternoon in ECC action. The final score was 59-70.

The loss  gives the Redhawks a record of 8-10 and 4-8 in the ECC. The loss comes after a great win over Queen's the night before.

Hard Fought First Half
Roberts Wesleyan was first to make it to the board with a layup by Kevin Madiamba. Minutes later the Redhawks saw their largest lead with a layup by Isaac Medeiros to go up 4-0. Medieros, a senior, had four points, five rebounds and one block for the match up.

Molloy fought back and soon tied the game with a dunk by Jaylen Morris and then led with a jumper from Brandon Williams. The Lions continued to hold the lead in the first half, but the Redhawks stayed at their heals. With just four minutes to go a jumper by Madiamba brought Molloy's lead down to one. Roberts Wesleyan had the opportunity to take the lead. The Lions however, answered strong and ended the first half 35-28.

Molloy Holds the Lead
The Redhawks started the half strong with a dunk by Madiamba. Madiamba totaled 10 points for the Redhawks and was five of seven from the field. While Molloy was able to keep their lead, Roberts Wesleyan kept the lead under 10 for the majority of the second half.

Molloy's Matt McLeod lead the game with a double double, scoring 25 points and 13 rebounds. As a team Molloy was shooting similarly to the Redhawks from the field, but had far better percentages from beyond the arc and from the line.

Towards the end of the game, the Lions started to widen the lead. Their largest lead came in the last minutes of play with another dunk by Jaylin Morris to give Molloy a lead of 13. Aleks Miljenovic was quick to answer for the Redhawks with a made layup, but there was not enough time to then catch the 11 point lead. Miljenovic came off the bench to contribute 11 points and six rebounds for Roberts Wesleyan.

By the Numbers
Roberts Wesleyan totaled 19 fouls for the afternoon, creating 20 free throw opportunities for the Lions. Molloy's free throw shooting was on point as they were 15 for 20.  In contrast, the Redhawks were shooting 45.5% from the line going five for 11. Molloy also took the edge in fast break points with six to the Redhawks zero and in points off turnovers.

Leading the Redhawks
Tyrel Dixon had a strong shooting performance; going  seven of 12 with 15 points and contributing seven rebounds he led the Redhawks. Malik Dare also came off the bench to post 11 points.  The Redhawks had four players scoring in the double digits (Dixon, Madiamba, Dare, and Miljenovic) but were unable to take the lead from Molloy

The Firebirds are currently one place ahead of the Redhawks in ECC standing with a record of 4-15 and 4-7(ECC). Actions starts at 4pm on Sunday February 8th at Roberts Wesleyan College.
