Bridgeport Gets Past Men's Basketball in Overtime

Roberts Wesleyan fell to the Purple Knights, 88-92, in a tense overtime loss

Bridgeport, Conn. (February 13, 2015) - The Men's Basketball team fell on the road to Bridgeport in overtime this evening in a close ECC match-up.

The Redhawks, who were facing Bridgeport for the second time this season, looked to avenge their previous loss of 74-87, but came up just short in a tight game.

Bridgeport Leads in the First Half
Bridgeport was first to get on the board with a three pointer from guard Devon Elliot, who was a key player for the Knights throughout the game, leading the team with 22 points.

Junior Mike Stone put the visitors on the board with a three-pointer, making it a 5-3 lead for the Puprlpe Knights. Stone would end the game with seven points and seven assists for the Redhawks.

Over the first 20 minutes, the game was played evenly as Roberts Wesleyan managed to stay within striking distance of the Purple Knights, never trailing by more than 10 points. To end the half, Marcus Gooding sunk a three-pointer putting the Redhwks just four points behind the Purple Knights going into halftime.

Gooding's Impressive Three-Point Shooting Gives Redhawks an Edge
Gooding was incredibly hot on the night, going 9-13 from long range. Those nine three-pointers tied the program record for three's in a game as he now joins Dan Kasambria and Eric Moser. Moser was the last player to accomplish the feat in 1996 against St. John Fisher. For Gooding, the junior guard paced the Redhawks with 29 points to go along with eight rebounds.

Roberts Wesleyan Rallies In the Second Half
Shots by Isaac Medeiros and Tyrel Dixon early in the second half propelled a short Roberts Wesleyan rally as the Redhawks took the lead with 15:20 left to play.

After more back-and-forth play, Bridgeport pulled away mid-way through the second half as they mounted a 10-point lead before the Redhawks rallied back.

Another one of Gooding's three-pointers tied the game with just two minutes to go before hitting a pair of free throws to give the visitors the lead. Bridgeport, however, found  a way to tied the game late, sending the game into overtime.

Bridgeport Takes Control in Overtime
The Purple Knights came out hard in overtime, quickly taking the lead before Roberts Wesleyan rallied again, making it a one possession game with just 19 seconds remaining.

With just a few ticks left on the clock, Bridgeport's Devon Elliot made both of his free throws to put Bridgeport up by four. However, Tyrel Dixon was quick to answer with a layup to cut Bridgeport's lead to just two points with three seconds left.

Needing to foul to stop the clock, Roberts Wesleyan sent Elliot to the charity stripe as as converted both shots to clinch the win for the Purple Knights.
