WHEELING, W.Va. (February 18, 2015) – Playing their second game in as many days, Roberts Wesleyan was unable to earn a similar result as they fell on the road to Wheeling Jesuit, 14-4.
After cruising to a decisive 17-9 win at Ohio Valley (W.Va.) on Tuesday, the Redhawks got off to a good start against the Cardinals when
Matt Benedict put the visitors on the board first off of a
Mike Hubert assist less than three minutes into the game. After Wheeling Jesuit responded four minutes later,
Dom Cianfarano put Roberts Wesleyan back on top with just three minutes left in the first quarter.
However, the lead didn't last long as Dereck Downs evened the score at 2-2 just a minute later. That goal sparked an incredible run for the Cardinals as they scored 11 more unanswered goals to take command of the game.
Cianfarano would stop the bleeding with 33 seconds remaining in the third quarter, but it was too little too late as the Redhawks ended the game being outshot 45 to 18.
Benedict added the last goal for Roberts Wesleyan with just 45 ticks left on the clock in the fourth quarter, giving him a team high 11 points (4 goals, 7 assists) through the first two games.
Making his first start in goal, Keith Kheen took the loss after making 13 saves.
The game was the season opener for the Cardinals, who were receiving votes in the latest USILA Coaches poll.
Up next for Roberts Wesleyan is a trip to No. 3 LIU Post this Sunday for their East Coast Conference opener. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
