ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball earned their first conference win of the season Friday night, defeating Mercy at home, 72-65.
In a close game throughout, the Redhawks took the lead for good with 14:13 remaining when
Quinn Carey drained a three-pointer to make it a 40-39 advantage.
Marcus Gooding gave the team their largest lead of the night several minutes later by hitting one of his four three's, making a 57-50 lead.
Mercy then cut the lead to just two points when Shaquille Stokes made a layup with 2:13 left, but the Redhawks managed to hang on for the win, which is their first since early December.
Senior forward Tryel Dixon led Roberts Wesleyan with 13 points, going 6 of 14 from the field and 1 of 3 at the line. Dixon also notched nine rebounds, seven assists, two blocked shots, and a steal.
Gooding finished the night with 12 points as
Malik Dare and
Jordan McBride scored 11 and 10 points respectively.
As a team, the Redhawks shot 40.4 percent from the field while forcing Mercy to turn the ball over 15 times.
The win puts Roberts Wesleyan at 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the ECC as they host St. Thomas Aquinas tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
