Bella Mitrevski added the insurance goal in the 70
th minute to give the Redhawks their ninth win of the season.
In the first half neither team was able to capitalize on any offensive chances with much of the possession being held in the middle of the field. Roberts Wesleyan's best opportunity came in the 2
nd minute of the game when freshman forward
Maya Rutland rang a shot off the post. The Redhawks had five shots in the half compared to the Bear's three with two being on target.
In the second half the girls stepped it up getting four shots on goal out of their eight shots taken. Groves' goal in the 61
st minute was shot to the lower left corner of the net to give them Redhawks a 1-0 lead. Mitrevski's goal in the 70
th minute was chipped over the keeper's head off an assist from fellow senior
Christina Burke.
"It was a great win for our seniors on their special day," said head coach
Sarah McClellan. "Our seniors are not just great soccer players, but great people and teammates. In the second half we really showed well to take over the game and find the back of the net."
The Redhawks face their next East Coast Conference match against the Bridgeport Purple Knights on Friday at 6 p.m. in Bridgeport , Conn.
