Maya Rutland and
Israela Groves both recorded the first goals of their college careers as the Roberts Wesleyan women's soccer team won on the road against Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 2-0.
Rutland netted the first goal of the game in the 22
nd minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder,
Erica Lamb.
Indiana University of Pennsylvania (5-3) responded by getting off four shots in ten minute span but only one shot forced starting Redhawk goalkeeper
Kelsey Brinkel to make a save. The Crimson Hawks outshot the Redhawks in the first half 7-4 but could not capitalize on their opportunities giving Roberts Wesleyan the lead at the half-time intermission.
In the second half Roberts Wesleyan held IUP to only three shots while getting off eight of their own. And in the 80
th minute Groves added the Redhawks second goal beating the keeper to the right side of the net. The goal extended the lead to 2-0 which Roberts would hold until the final whistle.
"It was a great win against a quality opponent," head coach
Sarah McClellan said. "It was an excellent team effort and a solid performance. It's great to see our team bounce back from last time out and move forward."
Brinkel received the win in the goal, making five saves in the game.
Orla Martin led the team in shots with three on goal and five in total.
Roberts Wesleyan (3-3-1) host Salem International University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
