Redhawks Overcome Falcons to Start Season 3-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team is now 3-0 to start the season after a 79-76 win over Notre Dame College on Wednesday night in the Voller Athletic Center. The last time the Redhawks started a season 3-0 was the 2010-2011 season when the team went 21-14 on the season and were still nicknamed the Raiders at the time.

Four players scored in double digits for the Redhawks with junior Peyton McLaurin leading the charge with 21 points. Junior center Jean Toussaint had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

McLaurin came up big late in the game for the Redhawks with 13 of his 21 points coming in the second half including back-to-back three pointers to tie the score at 73 with less than two minutes on the clock. McLaurin then added a layup for his eighth straight point and gave Roberts the two point lead with under one minute to play in regulation.

After the Redhawks forced a missed shot on Notre Dame's next trip down the floor, junior Ja'Sean Lewis grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled sending him to the free throw line for a one-and-one situation. Lewis missed his first but was able to grab his own rebound and then missed on a short jump shot which was rebounded by senior Manny Joseph. The ball found the hands of junior Michael Bush who was instantly fouled sending him to the line for two shots. Bush hit both shots giving Roberts a four point advantage with 28 seconds left in the game.

With the game clock winding down the Redhawks defense forced another missed Falcons shot, but Lewis came down with another offensive board, his ninth offensive rebound of the night and 25th rebound in total. Lewis kicked it out to sophomore Drew Scarberry who was fouled while shooting a three. The guard knocked down all three free-throws to give Roberts just a one point lead at 77-76. Junior Justin Vaughan would go ahead and seal the game for the Redhawks making two crucial free throws with 11 seconds on the clock to keep the Redhawks up by three points. The Falcons took a three point attempt to tie the game but the shot went long and possession went to the Redhawks to close out the game.

Bush along with his 12 points and four assists played a key role defensively for Roberts as the primary defender on the Falcons leading scorer Kyauta Taylor who came into the game averaging 31 points a contest. Bush held Taylor to 19 points on 5-of-16 shooting and also was a part of getting the guard fouled out of the game in the second half.

The Redhawks were 29-of-76 (38%) from the field and 9-of-29 (31%) from three point range.

Roberts (3-0) will play back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday in part of the Redhawks Alumni Classic. The Redhawks will take on Georgian Court on Saturday at 4 p.m. and will face Chestnut Hill on Sunday at 4 p.m.
