ERIE, Pa. – The Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team lost its first game of the season on Monday falling to Mercyhurst, 81-51.
A difficult first half set the tone for the game as the Redhawks struggled to shoot the ball and gave up 15 first half turnovers. Those turnovers allowed Mercyhurst to go on a 20-0 run beginning at the 12:19 mark to take control of the game. Roberts was 7-of-24 (29%) from the field in the first half leading to just 18 points. The score at the midway break was 39-18.
The shooting woes continued on into the second half as the Redhawks were 10-of-28 (35%) from the field and just 2-of-12 (16%) from three point range. 10 turnovers in the half led to 12 points for the Lakers. In total Mercyhurst scored 33 points off turnovers in the game.
Brad Williams led Roberts with 11 points on 3-of-8 shooting.
Jean Toussaint added six points and pulled down nine rebounds.
The Redhawks (6-1) will take on Mansfield University (1-2) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Decker Gymnasium.
