Women's Soccer Falls to Goldey-Beacom 3-2

WILMINGTON, DEL. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's soccer team saw a second half lead slip away, falling to Goldey-Beacom on the road, 3-2.

The Redhawks took the lead just over 17 minutes into the game when Israela Groves struck a shot from 15 yards out that snuck underneath the crossbar to give Roberts a 1-0 advantage. The assist went to Taylor Rutland. That lead held until the 49:59 mark in the second half when the Lightning found the back of the net. Taylor Owen took a shot 15 yards out that beat Redhawks' goalkeeper Kelsey Brinkel just inside the right post. Brinkel finished with seven saves on the day.

The game stayed knotted at one apiece until the 71st minute when senior defender Taylor Fletcher took a free kick from 25 yards away that beat the keeper to the left side of the goal giving the Redhawks a 2-1 lead.

Beginning at the 77:15 mark Goldey-Beacom used a two minute span to change the course of the game scoring on a penalty kick to tie the score up 2-2 and then putting away the game-winner in the 80th minute on a deflection from a crossed ball.

"We played quite well for portions of the game and certainly deserved a better result," said head coach Sarah McClellan. "There were some unlucky plays that led to goals against us. But the early season challenges will pay off in preparation for conference play."

The Redhawks fall to 1-2 on the season. They will head to Albany, N.Y. on Wednesday to take on the College of Saint Rose for a 6 p.m. matchup.
