ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team jumped to fourth place in the East Coast Conference standings after a 90-78 win over LIU Post on Sunday afternoon.
Isaiah Lewis,
Manny Joseph and
Brad Williams all finished with 15 points for the Redhawks to lead the offense. For Joseph it was a game-high for the season. Junior
Jean Toussaint added 12 points while also pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds to post the double-double.
A 13-2 run to end the first half helped the Redhawks establish an 11 point lead heading into the halftime break. But the Pioneers quickly closed the gap in the second half bringing their score within five points of the lead. Roberts answered following a timeout at the 17:41 mark and went on a 13-1 run to build their largest lead of the game at 17 points.
In the second half alone the Redhawks knocked down 17-of-22 free throws while the Pioneers only took 17 total free throws, hitting just nine of them. In total Roberts was 22-of-31 from the line in the game. LIU Post was 10-of-19.
The Pioneers won the turnover battle forcing Roberts into 15 while only turning the ball over eight times on their possessions, but efficient shooting and foul shots proved to be the difference in the Redhawks ending up on top. Roberts shot 55.4 percent from the field on 31-of-56 shooting and LIU Post shot 44.4 percent on 28-of-63 shooting.
LIU Post was led by Jared Rivers who finished with 21 points and six assists.
Roberts (11-5, 4-3 ECC) jumps above the Pioneers in the ECC standings because of the head-to-head win today. Both teams have 4-3 records in the conference. Up next, the Redhawks will travel to take on Queens College on Friday in Flushing, N.Y.
