Men's Basketball Loses Heart Breaker to Bridgeport on Late Three Pointer

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – It was a heartbreaking loss for the Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team as they fell to the University of Bridgeport on Friday night, 77-76 on a late three point shot with six seconds to go in the game.

The Redhawks looked to hand the Purple Knights just their second East Coast Conference loss of the season. The only conference loss the visitors had was handed to them by the Redhawks back on December 15 when the Redhawks won on the road, 85-82. Bridgeport came into Friday's game ranked No. 20 in the National D2SIDA Poll.

With the game tied 74-74 with 48 seconds to go junior Michael Bush was fouled and sent to the free throw line for two shots. Bush who is a near 80-percent foul shooter missed the first shot but sank the second giving Roberts a 75-74 lead with 28 seconds remaining. The Purple Knights missed a layup on their offensive possession and Bush was fouled and sent to the line again with a chance to put the Redhawks up three with 18 seconds left. The guard hit 1-of-2 leaving Roberts ahead 76-74. Bridgeport scrambled on offense looking for a shot and found an open Sharif Cobb who hit the long range shot with six seconds to go to give the Purple Knights a 77-76 advantage. Junior Brad Williams threw up a half-court shot for the Redhawks as time expired but the shot went long.

Jean Toussaint led the Redhawks with 15 points. Gintaras Bartaskas added 14 points on 5 of 6 shooting including four three pointers.

Both teams shot well from the field but Roberts had the edge going 29 of 61 (47.5%) while Bridgeport was 32 of 72 (44.4%).

The loss drops the Redhawks to 13-6 overall and 6-4 in the conference where they currently sit in fourth place. Bridgeport moves to 9-1 in the conference and 16-4 overall.

Roberts will host Mercy on Sunday in the Voller Athletic Center at 4 p.m.
