Men's Basketball Holds Off Mercy in Pivotal ECC Matchup

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team improved to 14-6 on Sunday with a 75-72 win over Mercy. The 14 game win mark is the most wins the Redhawks have had since the 2010-2011 season when the team finished 21-14.

Justin Vaughan had a team-high 14 points on 2 of 5 shooting. The junior was perfect from the free throw line going 9 of 9 in his 20 minutes of action. As a team the Redhawks were 29 of 34 from the line while the Mavericks only got to the line half as many times going 13 of 15.

A back-and-forth first half ended in the Redhawks favor when a personal foul call on Mercy's Marko Kozul led to two technical fouls on the player. With three seconds remaining in the first half the Redhawks received six consecutive foul shots. Vaughn hit all four of his shots and senior Manny Joseph went 1-for-2 giving Roberts a nine point lead heading into the break.

In the second half Vaughn's three pointer with 11:17 on the clock put the Redhawks up by 20. But the Mavericks didn't go away quietly as the visitors stormed back cutting the lead to only four points with two minutes to play. With 27 seconds left on the clock Mercy made it a one possession game with the score 73-70, but the Redhawks were able to make a pair of stops on the defensive end to hold the Mavericks off and seal the win.

Roberts still sits in the No. 4 spot of the East Coast Conference standings with a 7-4 conference mark. The Redhawks will travel to Washington D.C. for Friday's matchup against UDC followed by Sunday's game at St. Thomas Aquinas.
