Women’s Soccer Upsets No. 6 Nationally Ranked Mercy College, 1-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – History was made on Wednesday night as the Roberts Wesleyan women's soccer team upset No.6 nationally ranked and conference leader Mercy College with a late goal in the second half.

The first half proved to be a battle of possession in both ends of the pitch as both squads were held to only one shot. The second half proved to be a fight for whoever wanted the win the most. It wasn't until the 69th minute when the Redhawks would get a free kick opportunity from 30 yards out to set up the lone goal of the game. Junior midfielder Israela Groves lined up her attempt eventually saved by the Mercy goalkeeper, but freshman Justine Sharda was able to sweep up the ball inside the box and fired a one-timer into the back of the opposing net.

Mercy outshot the Redhawks 18-3, managing to get 11 of those shots on goal, but would be no match for the Redhawks' back line and solid goalkeeping by junior Kelsey Brinkel. Brinkel would have 11 saves on the night. Roberts managed to get two of their four shots on goal for the game. The win marks the first time in school history the women's soccer team has beaten an NCAA ranked team.

With two regular season games left, the Roberts Wesleyan women's soccer team will travel to Rockville Centre, NY next to face another conference opponent, the Molloy College Lions. This ECC matchup is scheduled for Saturday, October 20 and kickoff is slated to begin at 3 PM.
