AMHERST, N.Y. – On the second day of the ECC-CACC Challenge presented by WNY Knee and Orthopedic Surgery PC the Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team fell to Caldwell University, 84-70.
The Redhawks got off to a slow start that set the tone for the game. Roberts went scoreless for the first five minutes of the game while allowing Caldwell to take a 16 point lead. During the stretch the Redhawks had seven turnovers.
Peyton McLaurin's three pointer at the 14:48 mark of the first half was the Redhawks' first bucket of the game and also began a 17-3 run that pulled Roberts within two points of Caldwell. At the half Roberts only trailed by a point, 37-36.
The start of the second half mirrored the first half with the Redhawks not scoring for over five minutes. The first basket of the half came with 14:48 left in the game, the exact same time the team scored in the first half of play. The scoring drought allowed Caldwell to take a double digit lead. Roberts would trim the lead to five points but never was able to take the lead. The Cougars eventually pulled away, taking a 20 point advantage at one point and cruised on to the 84-70 win.
Fouls became a major factor in the game as four different players on Roberts fouled out. Caldwell converted on 21-of-32 from the free throw line.
Michael Bush and
Fope Okuyiga both scored 12 points to lead Roberts.
Senior
Justin Vaughan was the sole Redhawk to be chosen to the All-Tournament Team. The guard totaled 30 points over the two games.
The Redhawks (1-1) will travel to South Euclid, Ohio on Tuesday to take on Notre Dame College at 5:30 p.m.
