ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior
Justin Vaughan scored a career high 28 points to lead the Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team to an 89-71 win over Mansfield on Tuesday night.
Vaughan's career night came on an 11-of-15 shooting performance including 4-for-6 from three point range. The senior guard also pulled down a career high eight rebounds to lead the team in the category for the night.
The Redhawks got off to a slow start falling behind 13-4 early on but with 7:48 left in the first half Roberts were able to take their first lead of the game 26-25. At the halftime break the Redhawks held a 40-36 lead.
With 12:53 remaining in the second half the lead changed hands following a three pointer by Mansfield sophomore Taylor Sweeney to give the Mounties a 53-52 advantage.
Isaiah Lewis answered with a three point bucket to regain the lead for Roberts. The Redhawks then pushed the lead to nine points but Mansfield used a 10-0 run to grab a one point lead. Sophomore guard
Reggie Clark found his way to the rim for the layup and the foul giving Roberts the lead 66-65 and the Redhawks would hold and extend the lead from then on out.
The Redhawks held the Mounties scoreless from the field for the final 4:40 of play while going on a 15-1 run during that time span to close out the game.
Roberts dominated the offensive glass pulling down 13 offensive rebounds to just five of Mansfield. The extra effort on the glass led to 17 second chance points for the home team.
Four other Redhawks scored in the double digits including
Fope Okuyiga (13),
Peyton McLaurin (12),
Isaiah Lewis (11), and
Jean Toussaint (10).
Mansfield was led by senior Boz Bernstein with 18 points and seven assists.
Roberts moves to 3-2 on the year while Mansfield drops to 0-3.
Next up for the Redhawks is a road match against American International College. The game is scheduled for December 1st at 3:30 p.m.
