In their fifth game of the season, the Roberts Wesleyan women's soccer team fell to Urbana University on the road this Wednesday afternoon, 2-1.
Both teams traded shots back and forth but Urbana opened up the scoring early in the first half when the Redhawks awarded them an own-goal in the 20
thminute. A header by Urbana went wide but was redirected by a Roberts' defender and into their own net. Only a few moments later, the Blue Knights scored again in the 22
ndminute by Urbana's Alyssa Edwards. The goal was scored as a lob pass from Alyssa Garberich found the feet of Edwards inside the box. Edwards took her shot and made the score line 2-0.
It wasn't until the 63
rdminute of the second half that
Tiffany Melendez gave the Redhawks an opportunity to get back into the game as she scored her first goal of the season. Melendez got the Redhawks back on the board as a pass inside the box was dished in front of her, avoiding a defender, and firing the ball past the Urbana goalkeeper into the lower part of the net.
The final score line of the game would be a 2-1 loss for the Redhawks. However, the Redhawks proved to be the more aggressive team throughout the game offensively. This was evident as Roberts outshot Urbana 11-3. Also, Roberts created more set piece opportunities in the opposing end.
The Roberts Wesleyan women's soccer team (1-2-2) will be on the road again this weekend as they will face their first East Coast Conference matchup against NYIT in Old Westbury, NY. This game is slated to begin at 12 PM on Saturday, September 15.
