INDIANA, Pa. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's volleyball team got off to a slow start over the weekend at the Quality Inn Crimson Hawk Invitational hosted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania falling in each of their four matches.
The Redhawks opened up the tournament and their regular season with a matchup against West Liberty University. After falling behind 2-0 following the first two sets the Redhawks stormed back with a 25-22 win in the third set. West Liberty took the fourth set to hand Roberts its first loss of the season.
Rachel Holmes led the team with 11 kills while
Lauren Taeko Chase dished out 21 assists.
In the second Friday evening match Roberts took on Lake Erie College. The Redhawks came out aggressively in the opening set winning 25-17 to go up 1-0. But the Storm won the next three sets to close out the match for the victory.
Shelby Strausbaugh, who totaled 20 digs in the first game against West Liberty added another 15 digs in the match.
On Saturday the Redhawks began play in a highly competitive match against Holy Family University. Despite the 3-0 loss, two of the three sets went into extra points but Roberts was unable to gain the advantage. Sophomore
Grace Detwiler added nine kills and
Anastasia Smith had seven blocks in the match.
In the final match of the tournament the Redhawks took on host Indiana University of Pennsylvania falling 3-0. The No. 3 ranked team in the Atlantic Region won the first two sets handily but Roberts gave the Crimson Hawks a run in the third set falling 25-22.
Emily Rowlison led with seven kills.
Next up for the Redhawks is an exhibition match against NCAA Division III Brockport on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
