BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's volleyball team had to fight back from two sets down to pull out a 3-2 win over NCAA Division III Brockport in an exhibition match on Wednesday. It was the first win of the season for the Redhawks.
After falling behind 2-0 following the first two sets where the Redhawks didn't break 20 points the team stormed back in the final three sets winning 25-18, 30-28, and 15-13.
Roberts used an 8-2 run midway through the third set to gain the advantage and keep themselves in the match
Anastasia Smith and
Emily Rowlison both provided a block and a kill during the run.
The fourth set went into extra points (30-28) with the Redhawks grinding out the win to send the match into the fifth set. Roberts came up with 16 kills and Brockport added eight errors to help the Redhawks take the set.
In the fifth set the Redhawks got behind two points early but three errors by the Golden Eagles and a service ace from
Shelby Strausbaugh turned things around. Brockport was able to regain the lead at 13-12, but the Redhawks close the match out with three straight points including a final kill by Rowlison.
Grace Detwiler led the team with 11 kills. The sophomore also added an ace and seven digs. Strausbaugh had four aces on the night along with 22 digs.
Lauren Taeko Chase had 18 assists.
The Redhawks will travel to Albany on Saturday for matches against Saint Rose and Nyack. The matches are scheduled for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
