ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior guard/forward
Peyton McLaurin continued to have the hot hand on offense for Roberts scoring 26 points, but it wasn't enough to get the Redhawks over the East Coast Conference leading Molloy Lions on Sunday. Roberts lost the game 83-77.
After a steady paced first half Molloy took a 35-33 lead into halftime. In the second half both teams came out with urgency pushing the pace of play considerably faster. That pace played into the Lions benefit as they went on a 17-4 run to start the second half and took a 15 point lead. Two consecutive turnovers by the Redhawks allowed Molloy to extend the lead even further to 21 points with 11:18 left in the game.
The Redhawks were able to slowly cut away at the Lion's lead and knocked it down to nine points with 1:18 left. A layup by
Jean Toussaint cut the lead to seven and then a three point play by McLaurin made the score 75-71 in favor of Molloy with 53 seconds remaining. The Lions went 8-of-8 down the stretch from the free throw line to seal the game.
Along with his 26 points McLaurin added nine rebounds and four assists. Toussaint had a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Both
Justin Vaughan and
Armon Nasseri posted 14 points.
Roberts Wesleyan (6-6, 2-3 ECC) has now lost two straight in conference play. The team will look to get back in the win column on Friday when they travel to Bridgeport to take on the Purple Knights. Game time at UB is scheduled for 7 p.m. Roberts will then head to Mercy for a Sunday afternoon matchup.
