Women's Volleyball Overcomes Deficit to Defeat Queens, 3-2

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A poor start got the Roberts Wesleyan women's volleyball team into a hole on Friday night against Queens College, but the Redhawks were able to overcome a 2-0 deficit to defeat Queens 3-2 for their first win of the season.

Roberts dropped the first two sets to Queens 26-24, 25-23 but with the match on the line the Redhawks found a way to close out the third set in their favor, winning 25-23. Freshman Lauren Norwood was a big part of the Redhawks finding their way back into the match. The freshman brought a much needed offensive spark for Roberts providing timely kills for Roberts on several occasions. Norwood finished with 10 kills on 17 attack attempts (.471).

After gaining the momentum from the third set comeback the Redhawks rallied to dominate the fourth and fifth sets with scores of 25-14, 15-4, respectively.

Along with the spark from Norwood, juniors Emily Rowlison and Tori Westfall were crucial in the fourth set combining for five service aces. The Redhawks had eight aces total in the fourth set alone. Rowlison also had two kills and one block in the set to propel Roberts.

In the fifth set the Redhawks took full control with senior Anastasia Smith leading the way. The senior middle had a perfect five kills on five attempts. Smith led the game with 18 kills, a career high for her.
