ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Senior guard
Justin Vaughan's timely three pointer with 39 seconds left in a tied game helped lead the Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team to an 87-83 victory over Molloy on Sunday afternoon.
Vaughan finished with 20 points on the day to lead the category for the Redhawks, but no points were more important than the five he put up in the final moments of the game.
After a made free throw by Molloy the score stood at 78-78 with under one minute to play. Vaughan's three pointer gave Roberts the lead and then the senior came away with a steal on the next possession followed by a foul and two made free throws to put the Redhawks up by five, 83-78.
In the final 13 seconds of the game Roberts went 4-for-4 from the line to close the game out with made free throws by
Michael Bush and
Peyton McLaurin.
Roberts was 31-of-55 (56.4%) from the field and knocked down 10 triples in the game. Five players scored in the double digits. Bush was the second leading scorer with 17 points while also dishing out five assists. McLaurin had 15 points, five assists, five rebounds, and three steals.
The win over Molloy moves the Redhawks into fourth place in the conference standings. The team is now 11-9 overall and 7-5 in the ECC. Molloy sits in third place with a 10-3 ECC mark.
The Redhawks will be back at home this week with a Friday night matchup against NYIT and a Sunday afternoon matchup against LIU Post.
