Men's Tennis Wins at Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Roberts Wesleyan men's tennis team won its second straight close match against Pennsylvania opponents when it edged Kutztown University 4-3 in a match played on the KU Courts.

Junior Dennis Barlotta and Senior Andrew Freeman were double winners for the Redhawks.  They teamed  to win the 3rd doubles match against KU's Logan Kemp and Eric Gibson 6-1.  They both went on to defeat the same two players by identical 6-0 scores at 5th and 6th singles.  RWC's   Matthew Forrest then defeated KU's Ben Kelly 6-0, 6-3 at 4th singles.  The Golden Bears won at the top three singles spots.  Nolan Peruguini defeated the Redhawk's  Guido Janssen at 1st singles in three sets, taking the tiebreaker 10-5.  KU's Renata Santos also won a three setter, defeating Boyd Blackburn at 2nd singles 11-9 in the 3rd set tiebreaker.  Josh Carl won in a straight set match at 4th singles over Harmeet Luthra.

The match format was altered due to weather and the singles were played first, each team winning three singles points.  Barlotta and Freeman struck first in doubles with a 6-1 win at 3rd.  Jansen and Blackburn, both victims of close tiebreaker losses in singles, rallied to win the doubles point and the match for the Redhawks, defeating Peruguini and Santos 7-6(0) at 1st doubles.

"We only won one of four tiebreak matches today, but it was the one that counted," said head coach Tom Linhart. "This was a closely contested, hard fought college tennis match and I am pleased with how we pulled it out."

The 8-7 Redhawks travel to Washington DC for a Saturday showdown with ECC rival UDC at 2pm at the Southeast Tennis and Education Center.
