ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's volleyball team couldn't build off the momentum of a first set win on Tuesday night against Le Moyne College as the Redhawks fell to the Dolphins 3-1. The Redhawks haven't picked up a win over Le Moyne in volleyball since 2014.
Roberts hadn't won a set in its first three matches of the season, but the team came out ready to play in the home opener taking a 25-20 victory in the first set. Junior
Emily Rowlison provided a much needed run for the Redhawks after the team found themselves down 10-6 in the opening set. The Yuma, Ariz. native provided back-to-back aces to tie the score at 10-10, then dished out an assist and finished off a seven point run with a kill. Roberts finished the set with two straight points in which Rowlison had an impact. The junior had an assist to a kill by
Anastasia Smith and then finished with another ace to claim the set.
Even though the momentum was in the hands of the hosts it was Le Moyne who began to gain confidence after taking the second set 27-25. Roberts was the first to set point in the second and had a chance to win the set with a 24-23 advantage but the Redhawks couldn't find a way to close it out.
Le Moyne rolled to an easy win in the third set after the Redhawks struggled to get any offense going while the Dolphins took control of every opportunity. Le Moyne had 10 kills on 19 attempts in the third with just two hitting errors.
Roberts couldn't find a way to keep pace with Le Moyne in the fourth set as the Dolphins came up with a 25-16 set win to take the match.
Smith had 12 kills to lead the Redhawks while Jacquelyne Ghindia also had 12 kills to propel the Dolphins. Rowlison had an overall solid match which included 28 assists and four aces.
Roberts Wesleyan (0-4) will have their eyes set on getting a tally in the win column on Wednesday night when the Redhawks take on Brockport at 7 p.m. in the Voller Athletic Center.
