Men's Basketball Falls in Close ECC Contest to STAC, 85-71

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Roberts Wesleyan goes down to Saint Thomas Aquinas College 85-71 in a match that was closer than the final score reflects. After leading by five going into the break, STAC's bench makes the difference in the second half.

The first half started as a back-and-forth affair as the teams exchanged the lead four times, however once a Shane Fanning triple gave Roberts the lead with 11:29 left in the first half, they were able to see out the half ahead. Fanning would end the night 5-for-9 from three point land, with 19 points.

It took less than four minutes for STAC to take the lead in the second half, where their depth and defense gave them the advantage, as their bench outscored Roberts' 15-2, with sixth man Jamar Sudan picking up 11 points. On defense, they closed their gaps and forced the Redhawks into taking difficult threes. After going 7-15 beyond the arc in the first half, the Redhawks could only get 2 triples over the Spartan defense on 12 attempts.

Roberts' starting five spent most of the game on the floor, with only Demani Smith able to score a field goal off the bench. Reggie Clark was able to pick up 22 points for the Redhawks on the night, shooting 50% on his FGs (6-12) and 3-8 from three point land. The Spartan's offense was much more spread, with all but two of their players getting on the board. Demetre Roberts led the way for his team, by scoring 20 points, and going 8-8 from the line.

With that loss, the Redhawks fall to 4-20 on the season, and 1-12 in the conference. Coach Mark Saladzius and his men will get a week to prepare before they host University of the District of Columbia on Sunday, February 23 at the Voller Athletic Center. Tip off will be at 4 p.m. following the Women's game at 2 p.m.
