ROCHESTER, N.Y. - It's been a familiar sight over the past eight years. The Roberts Wesleyan men's and women's cross country teams holding up the East Coast Conference championship trophy has become commonplace. On Saturday, both teams again won the ECC Cross Country Championships on their home course for the seventh consecutive time (the 2020)Â season was canceled).
The women's team scored 29 points to beat out second-place Daemen with 44 points. The men's team finished with 17 points, well ahead of the second-place team ,St. Thomas Aquinas, with 76 points.
In the women's race, senior
Bailey Gostomski led the way with a first-place finish in 18:07.3, three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from Saint Thomas Aquinas.
Abigail Gostomski joined her sister in the top five with a fourth-place finish with a time of 18:34.7. The Redhawks placed the remaining scored runners in the top 10.
Kylee Odell was sixth (18:52.8),
Acacia Barber eighth (19:00.8), and
Jennifer Zambuto was 10th (19:13.8).
The men's team dominated the field taking eight of the top 10 positions.
James Betts led the way, crossing the line in 25:47.3.
Shane Pease finished in second place with a time of 25:48.6.
Rounding out the top 10 for the Redhawks were
Lee Sortore in third (26:01.8),
Joshua Johnson in fifth (26:15.6),
Owen White in sixth (26:24.6),
Blake Kasper seventh (26:25.1),
Maxin McKenzie eighth (26:32.6) and
Jackson Doran ninth (26:36.2).
"It's a different group of kids every year, so it's rewarding each time," said head coach
Andrew Dorr. "It's the same goal and achievement each time, but there's a unique set of challenges. It's nice to keep the streak alive for another year because it won't last forever."
Roberts earned both ECC Runner of the Year awards.
Bailey Gostomski was the women's runner of the year and Betts earned the men's runner of the year award.
Owen White was named the ECC Rookie of the Year.
The Redhawks will continue to the NCAA Division II East Regional Championships on Nov. 6. The races will be hosted by Roberts Wesleyan on its home trails.
