DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Roberts Wesleyan's Men's Lacrosse team traveled to Mercy College this past weekend for their first ECC match-up of the season. The contest was a back-and-forth sequence giving Mercy the opportunity to close the game out with a 9-8 lead with 23 seconds left. Senior Hunter Lemieux was able to tie the game with just 12 seconds left, forcing the game into overtime. But, a golden goal by Mercy's Tommy McPartland finished the hard-fought game, tallying the final score at 10-9.
The contest between the two ECC teams was close from the beginning, as the score bounced back-and-forth. The Redhawks had the edge going into halftime with a 1 goal lead. Three consecutive goals in the third quarter put Roberts at a 8-4 advantage, but Mercy scored 5 straight to take the lead with 30 seconds left. This was the first overtime game of the season for the Redhawks, and while it didn't end as we hoped, the team put on a gritty and competitive display.
Lemieux and Freshman Jordon Deats led the Redhawks in scoring with 3 goals a-piece. Lemieux added 2 ground balls and a caused turnover, while Deats picked up 2 ground balls as well. Junior Michael Pierog contributed 2 goals to the board and Senior Matt Gademske rounded out the scoring with 1 goal. Gademske picked up 3 ground balls on the day. Goalkeeper Pat Hynes managed to save 22 shots against the Mavericks, just one shy of his personal best.
The Redhawks continue their brief bout on the road and travel to Philadelphia on Saturday for a game against Chestnut Hill College at 11 am. Support the Men's Lacrosse team by watching the live stream on the ECC Sports Network.
