SPARKILL, N. Y. - Senior attack Matt Gademske registered five goals and eight assists to set a school record for most points in a game as the Roberts Wesleyan men's lacrosse team rolled to a 26-4 win over host Saint Thomas Aquinas College in an East Coast Conference game on Saturday.
Gademske scored two goals in the first 4:08 of the game and didn't look back, registering nine points (4 goals, 5 assists) as the Redhawks (6-3, 2-1 East Coast Conference) built a 15-0 lead at the half. His record-breaking point came on an assist to senior Nate Maloney with 5:33 remaining in the third quarter.Â
"The offense runs through him," Redhawks coach Rocky Delfino said. "He's like a point guard in basketball. He was seeing the field great today and made the most of his opportunities. It was a good matchup for him all day today."
The 5-foot-9, 170-pound Gademske set up camp behind the net and was able to pick apart the Spartans' zone defense while besting the previous record of 11 points set by Dom Cianfarano in 2016.
"I just love being back there," Gademske said.. "It gives you a whole different view of the field, kind of like being a quarterback in football. … I would just move behind the net to try and draw a slide and feed my wing guys. If they backed off me, I just went to the net and tried to bury the shot." Â
He also had plenty of help from his teammates as fellow seniors Maloney and Hunter Lemieux each registered five goals and freshman Jordon Deats scored three.
"I'm not getting 13 points without the guys around me," said Gademske, who upped his season point total to 46. "So, I have to give credit to the guys to my left and right."
Lemieux (5 goals, 4 assists) tallied five points in the first half and leads Roberts with 47 points (37 goals, 10 assists) on the season. Maloney (5 goals, 1 assist) and Deats (3 goals, 3 assists) each finished with six points.
Junior Michael Pierog finished with two goals and an assist and sophomore Reid Jackowski contributed a goal and three assists. Senior faceoff specialist Mitch Streety had a goal and an assist while juniors Connor Jones, Zach Cree and Jonathon Deats and sophomore Dan Doviak all added a goal. Doviak's tally came with 2.2 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Senior Pat Hynes made nine saves in three quarters of action and freshman Aidan Sheehan stopped both shots he faced in the fourth.
Streety won 20 of 29 faceoffs and led the Redhawks with 13 ground balls. Senior Anthony Anthony Diamico contributed seven ground balls.
Roberts dominated in ground balls 52-24 and was successful on 18 of 19 clear attempts.
"Everything was clicking today," Delfino said. "We really wanted to focus on all facets of the game and we were able to do that."
The Redhawks return to action against Frostburg State University at noon on Saturday, April 24 in Frostburg, Md. Â
