Redhawks Fall to Saint Michael's in Season Opener

COLCHESTER, Vt. - A penalty kick goal in the 65th minute was the difference Thursday afternoon as the Roberts Wesleyan women's soccer team fell to Saint Michael's on the road, 1-0.

A foul on the edge of the box at the 64:44 mark gave Saint Michael's a penalty kick opportunity which was converted by junior midfielder Izzy Ruprecht. The foul also put the Redhawks down a player after a red card was given following the foul, making a comeback attempt even more of a challenging task.

The Redhawks created opportunities late in the contest despite the disadvantage firing off three shots and collecting two corner kick chances in the final 20 minutes of play.

"We were chasing the game a bit more than we would like," said head coach Sarah McClellan. "That's part of being on the road. We still got some chances even being a man down."

The Purple Knights had the offensive advantage in the game outshooting Roberts 18 to 5 with 11 shots on goal compared to just two by the Redhawks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nicolette Knauf made nine saves in net for Roberts.

The women's soccer team will be back in action again on Saturday for a home contest against Nyack. Kick off is set for 2 p.m.
