STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan men's and women's swimming and diving teams joined three other teams at the first-ever CSI Invite over the weekend for its final meet before semester break. Roberts competed against The College of Staten Island, The College of Saint Rose and Mount Saint Mary College.
The women's team walked away with a championship banner provided by the East Coast Conference for its first-place finish over fellow ECC member CSI. The women finished with 160 total points, which was good for a tie of first place with Saint Rose. CSI took third and Mount Saint Mary placed fourth.
In men's action, the Redhawks finished third overall with 125 points. CSI grabbed first place for the men followed by Saint Rose in second and Mount Saint Mary in fourth.
"Headed into this meet the team knew they had a big challenge ahead," said head coach Sara Smith. "Staten Island and Saint Rose brought their best and provided some great competition. The energy on the pool deck motivated our Redhawks and I am beyond impressed with the fast swimming. To see the team swimming this fast, mid-season, excited us as we head into the second half of the season."
Over the course of the two-day invitational the Redhawks set nine new program records, including four from the men's team and five from the women's team.
Sophomore
Mya June broke three records while also winning three individual events. June placed first in the 100-yard freestyle (53.47), 200-yard butterfly (2:19.13), and 200-yard freestyle (1:58.82). The Schenectady, N.Y. native also was a part of the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team who finished in 8:32.97. June was joined by
Rennee Rozler,
Ellie LaBenne and
Amanda Charleston.
Charleston was also a triple winner for Roberts while setting a new program record. The graduate student won the 500-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 4:56.80 to set the record. Charleston also won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:46.04.
Rozler set one new Roberts record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:35.29.
The men's 200-yard medley relay team posted a new best of 1:40.40 which was good for a third-place finish. The relay team consisted of
Gabe Rivers,
Tommy Booth,
Casey Webb, and
Andon Fedor.
Both Rivers and Booth added records of their own in an individual event. Rivers set the new best time in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.84) while Booth broke the 200-yard breaststroke record with a time of 2:14.19. Booth also went on to win the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.05.
In total, Roberts won 12 events at the CSI Invite.
The Redhawks will be back to competition again on Jan. 14 on the road against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
