ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Roberts Wesleyan University women's soccer team faced its first defeat of the season in a 3-0 loss to Mansfield University.
The Redhawks started with a few quick chances, with an early corner kick and a flurry in the box off a cross. Despite this, the Mountaineers quickly got on the scoreboard with a goal from Olivia Bowman in the sixth minute.Â
Mansfield found the back of the next twice more, first in the 16th minute and then again in the 36th.Â
While the final result doesn't show it, Roberts had a relentless attack throughout the match, ending the game with 21 shots and 12 corner kicks. Freshman Ella White led the team with seven shots and junior Gabrielle Ciambella trailed just behind with five.Â
Though none of these opportunities resulted in goals, Redhawks coach Sarah McClellan remained positive. "The universe wasn't on our side today. We didn't get any kind of lucky bounces going our way, but I thought we created enough chances to win the game. I thought we were the better team," she said.Â
This is the first regular season game the Redhawks have lost since September 29, 2021. In spite of this, McClellan says the team is "grateful" to not feel so much pressure about an undefeated record and "to be able to focus on what we need to do later in the season."
Roberts will head to Philadelphia to face Chestnut Hill College in another non-conference matchup next Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.Â
