ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The quickest way to score a point in volleyball is to score on the serve. The Redhawks managed to do that 19 times on Friday night to take down East Coast Conference opponent D'Youville, 3-1.
Six different players recorded a service ace in the win. Sophomore
Sydney Yanak and freshman
Olivia Price each had five aces to lead the Redhawks. The only match with a higher team ace total in the last 10 years was on Oct. 4, 2019 when Roberts had 23 aces in a match against Queens. Less than a month ago at the Indiana University of PA Invitational the Redhawks recorded 18 aces, also against D'Youville in a non-conference matchup.
"We always work on serving, but the last couple weeks we've worked on serving tough," said head coach
Doug Porterfield.
Beyond the phenomenal play at the service line, Roberts was aggressive all night using a well-distributed attack to keep the Saints guessing on the defensive end.
Laura Amaya,
Celine Malosa, and Yanak each had nine kills on the night. Malosa went 9-for-16 (.563) on attacks with no errors for her best outing of the season.
"Celine has had two games in a row where she is just on," Porterfield said. Malosa also added two blocks on the night and a couple digs.
In what was a three player rotation for the night, the setters dished out double-digit assists. Freshman
Caleigh Schroeder and sophomore
Sarina Pasquantonio finished the game with 13 assists while freshman
Morgan Burnett added 10 assists.
In the defensive effort, Teagan Webster came up with 20 digs for her second straight games with 20 or more digs.
Roberts (3-12, 1-2 ECC) will travel to Molloy and Queens next Saturday and Sunday, respectively to continue ECC match-play.
